Geng Tan is a long-serving leader, organizer, and volunteer for a myriad of community organizations that support and service new Canadians. He is the founder, first-term Executive President, and former Co-chair of the Council of Newcomer Organizations, and Vice Chairman of the Confederation of Toronto Chinese Canadian Organizations. Geng has also participated in numerous panels, providing input and advice on immigration and community development policies. In 2012, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal for his service to Canada and is also the recipient of an Ontario Volunteer Service Award. Geng was formerly a senior nuclear chemist and previously worked at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) and Ontario Power Generation (OPG). Prior to coming to Canada, he received a Bachelor of Engineering in Organic Chemical Engineering from Hunan University in China, held various managerial positions, and was a certified senior engineer. He has since completed a Master of Applied Science and a PhD in Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry from the University of Toronto.
Geng Tan is the first Mandarin-speaking Member of Parliament elected to the House of Commons. He is also a member of the Standing Committee of Natural Resources, Vice-Chair of the Canada-China Legislative Association, Chair of the Canada-Nepal Parliamentary Friendship Group, and a member of the executive for a number of other Parliamentary Friendship Groups.
